'From land-locked to land-linked'

HONG KONG / VIENTIANE - Since its inauguration in December 2021, the China-Laos Railway has experienced a significant increase in both passenger and freight volumes, enhancing the availability of goods and facilitating educational pursuits, family visits, medical appointments, and tourism for people along the route.

A group of 25 journalists from China and across ASEAN countries participated in the ASEAN media tour 2024 from June 24 to 25 in Vientiane, Laos. The event highlighted significant developments of the railway, including the Vientiane South Station, the Vientiane Saysettha development zone, and the Vientiane Railway Station.

During the press conference on Monday, Darany Phommavongsa, Lao Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, said that the Laos-China railway symbolizes friendship, and has significantly contributed to the success of Visit Lao Year 2024 by facilitating travel for both domestic and international tourists, ensuring a delightful and memorable travel experience.

Since its launch, the railway has transported 5.7 million passengers, averaging about 6,000 passengers per day, according to Saleumsak Xayamoungkhoun, head of the administration office at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Laos.

The inauguration of the Laos-China railway has marked a new phase in Laos's development, as it plays a crucial role in the country's transportation reform. This development connects Laos with neighboring countries, transforming the nation from land-locked to land-linked, Saleumsak said.
