Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and senior officials of the special administrative region government on Tuesday attended a ceremony in the city to commemorate the Victory Day of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

They paid a silent tribute to the memory of thousands of martyrs in the war after a flag-raising ceremony and a rifle volley salute at the Hong Kong City Hall Memorial Garden.

Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and senior central government officials such as Liu Guangyuan, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, and Cui Jianchun, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR, also attended the ceremony.

Other attendees at the event included lawmakers, representatives from war veteran groups, as well as members from local district organizations, uniformed groups and youth groups.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence (MWRCD) was officially launched on Tuesday.

The facility, converted from the existing Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, focuses on the history of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, aiming to cultivate a stronger sense of national esteem and patriotism among Hong Kong residents. 

An exhibition titled "Brothers in Arms: War of Resistance Activities of the East River Column in Shenzhen and Hong Kong" will open on Wednesday with free admission to the public.
