HK records hottest temperature so far this year on Sunday

HONG KONG - Hong Kong recorded its hottest temperature so far this year on Sunday afternoon as a subtropical ridge brought fine and extremely hot weather to the city, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The observatory said temperatures reached 34 degrees Celsius at its office in Tsim Sha Tsui while the mercury rose to about 35°C in many areas across the city.

Tai Po in the New Territories recorded 34.4°C at 1 pm while Lau Fau Shan saw 34.5°C at 2 pm. On Hong Kong Island, Wong Chuk Hang recorded 32.8°C at 12 pm and 3 pm, according to the observatory

“The maximum temperature recorded at the observatory was 34.8 degrees, the highest so far this year,” it said in an advisory.

Tai Po in the New Territories recorded 34.4°C at 1 pm while Lau Fau Shan saw 34.5°C at 2 pm. On Hong Kong Island, Wong Chuk Hang recorded 32.8°C at 12 pm and 3 pm, according to the observatory.

It issued the Very Hot Weather warning on Sunday morning and reminded members of the public to take precautions against heat stroke.

The observatory said the subtropical ridge will weaken slightly in the next couple of days, but it will remain very hot over the coast of southern China, with temperatures in the city expected to range from 29°C to 34°C on Monday.

A southerly airstream will bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the coastal areas of Guangdong in the middle and latter parts of this week.

The mercury is expected to range from 28°C to 33°C from Tuesday to Saturday before going up again to 29°C-34°C next Sunday, the observatory added.
