The Hong Kong Observatory said on Tuesday that it will raise the typhoon signal No 1 over the city on Thursday or early Friday as tropical cyclone Trami, currently located to the east of the Philippines, intensifies and moves northwest towards the South China Sea.

The HKO said in a weather bulletin that it will issue the Standby Signal No 1 once Trami comes within 800 kilometers of the city.

“Under the combined effect of Trami and the northeast monsoon, it will be windy and become cloudy with a few showers over the coast of southern China later on Friday and over the weekend,” the HKO said.

Depending on the movement of Trami, the observatory said it will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No 3 later on.

At noon Tuesday, Trami was centered about 660 kilometers east of Manila and was forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometers per hour towards the vicinity of Luzon. The tropical cyclone was expected to intensify gradually and later enter the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

The observatory said weather in Hong Kong on Wednesday will be fine and dry with temperatures ranging from 23 to 30 degrees Celsius.
