Shenzhen sees 28 new patents granted per hour this year

More than 142,190 patents were granted in Shenzhen during the first seven months of this year, with more than one-third being invention patents, according to the latest data released by the city’s market supervision authority.

This equals an average of 28 patents having been granted per hour, showing the technology boomtown’s strong innovation momentum.

Of the 11 districts in Shenzhen, Bao'an district has had the highest number of patents granted, followed by Nanshan and Longgang districts.

In terms of the number of invention patents, Nanshan district — the cradle of many technology giants — topped the ranking and is also the only district to have been granted over 10,000 invention patents, accounting for over 37 percent of the city’s total.

The number of PCT applications — an indicator reflecting global intellectual property advantages — reached 8,555 in Shenzhen between January to July this year, with Longgang district leading the ranking.

In China, the city topped the charts with 235,100 domestic patents granted last year. The number of invention patents per square kilometer stands at 150.38, maintaining the city’s position in the top spot in the country for 18 consecutive years. Additionally, Shenzhen — with 15,900 PCT applications — is the leader among major cities in the nation and has been for 20 consecutive years.
