BEIJING  A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Tuesday said that the recent judicial guidelines issued by the mainland on imposing criminal punishments on diehard "Taiwan independence" separatists do not target Taiwan compatriots.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to a press inquiry on Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' willful misinterpretation of the judicial document and recent acts to heighten tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

The DPP authorities deliberately confuse the majority of Taiwan compatriots with diehard "Taiwan independence" separatists, and attempt to stoke fear and sway public opinion, all of which is malicious, Chen said.

"As always, we warmly welcome and support our Taiwan compatriots to participate in cross-Strait exchange and cooperation in various fields, and to enhance their understanding of the mainland," he said.

On June 21, Chinese authorities issued a set of guidelines on imposing criminal punishments on diehard "Taiwan independence" separatists who undertake or incite secessionist acts, allowing the death penalty and trials in absentia in relevant cases.

The guidelines, jointly issued by the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, and the ministries of public security, state security, and justice, took effect upon release.

In response to another press inquiry over the separatist rhetoric made by Lai Ching-te and an official with Taiwan's mainland affairs council recently, Chen stressed that any act that challenges the one-China principle and provokes the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will definitely be punished and is doomed to fail.

Lai Ching-te's deceitful narrative of "Taiwan independence" will not fool the public in Taiwan, nor will it whitewash Lai's nature as a worker for "Taiwan independence" and a troublemaker, said Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office

Since he assumed the role of the Taiwan region's new leader, Lai has blatantly advocated the so-called "two states" theory based on distorted facts and legal basis, which has sparked strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition across the Strait, Chen said.

Lai's deceitful narrative of "Taiwan independence" will not fool the public in Taiwan, nor will it whitewash Lai's nature as a worker for "Taiwan independence" and a troublemaker, Chen added.

Based clearly on history and jurisprudence, the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of China. Although the two sides of the Strait have yet to be completely reunified, the sovereignty and territory of China have never been divided and will never be allowed to be divided, and Taiwan's status as part of China's territory has never changed and will never be allowed to change, Chen said.
