HONG KONG - More than 2,000 dining outlets across the city will celebrate the 27th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by offering up to 29-percent-off discounts, catering industry leaders said on Wednesday.

The 29-percent-off discount, which means that consumers will pay 71 percent of the original price, symbolizes the date of July 1, the anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the establishment day of the HKSAR.

Tommy Cheung Yu-yan, the lawmaker representing the catering industry, along with representatives from eight catering industry associations, held a news conference on Wednesday to outline the citywide “7.1 discount promotion”.

Cheung revealed that the number of restaurants participating in 2024 has increased by several hundred compared to last year, and the number is still growing.

Cheung emphasized that the promotion will cover restaurants across the city, from breakfast to dinner, aiming to celebrate the occasion of the SAR’s 27th anniversary

On July 1, a public holiday in Hong Kong, restaurants, cafes, pubs and stores joining the campaign will discount selected dishes or food items, while some will offer 29-percent-off on all meals for dine-in customers, Cheung said. He added that some offers will start before July 1 and continue beyond the holiday.

Participating food outlets include Maxim’s, Fairwood, Café de Coral, Tao Yuan, Fu Lin, as well as fast-food chains such as McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Cheung emphasized that the promotion will cover restaurants across the city, from breakfast to dinner, aiming to celebrate the occasion of the SAR’s 27th anniversary.

Also at the meeting, Yeung Ho-wang, president of the Association of Restaurant Managers and CEO of catering firm Fulum Group, remarked that most of the restaurants under his association will join the 7.1 discount campaign and provide a month-long promotion for customers.

For example, numerous bars, cafès and barbecue restaurants under the Fulum Group will offer a 30 percent discount, Yeung revealed.

Night owls will not miss out, as Kavin Chan, managing director at Lan Kwai Fong Entertainments, announced that anyone who would like to grab a bite or have a drink at Lan Kwai Fong can enjoy various discounts on July 1.

Cheung encouraged everyone to participate in the event and experience the holiday vibe.

Since 2022, the catering industry has held similar discount promotions to celebrate July 1 and the National Day holiday on Oct 1.
