Chinese shares close higher Friday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.14 percent to 2,890.9 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.45 percent higher at 8,597.17 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 606.11 billion yuan (about $85 billion), up from 588.63 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Shares in the sectors of kitchen and bathroom appliances led the gains, while those in the banking and photovoltaic equipment sectors suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.92 percent to close at 1,659.53 points on Friday.
